Robotic demolition uses remotely operated compact plant with selected attachments to break, crush or remove material. Moving the operator away from the attachment can change exposure and access options, but it does not make demolition automatic, vibration-free, dust-free or safe by itself. The structure, method, plant, licences, engineering, hazardous materials and work zone still have to be planned for the real site.
This Brisbane and South East Queensland guide explains the information needed to scope selected robotic-demolition work. It does not promise a fixed output, programme, saving, machine size or suitability.
Confirm whether the work is demolition
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland defines demolition work as work to demolish, deconstruct or dismantle a structure, or part of a structure, that is load-bearing or otherwise related to the structure's physical integrity. Its current demolition guidance explains Queensland licensing, notification, supervision, training and high-risk construction-work requirements.
Whether a demolition licence or notification is required depends on the structure and method. Work involving pre- or post-tensioned structural components, load-shifting equipment, induced collapse or other defined circumstances can trigger specific requirements. Notifiable work includes defined demolition at or above the applicable height, load-shifting machinery on a suspended floor and explosives. The responsible project team must check the current rule and facts; a blog article cannot determine the licence or notice outcome for a job.
Demolition of a load-bearing element or an element related to physical integrity is high-risk construction work and requires the applicable safe work method statement process. The nominated competent person, duty holders and project approvals remain important even when the plant is remote controlled.
Define exactly what is removed and what remains
- Mark the limits, depth and sequence of the proposed removal.
- Identify the structural function of the affected slab, wall, beam, footing or other element.
- Record adjacent structure, finishes, services and equipment that must remain.
- Specify the required remaining surface, reinforcement treatment and handover condition.
- Allocate responsibility for engineering, temporary support, set-out, isolation, debris and verification.
Robotic equipment does not decide a demolition sequence. The Queensland Demolition work Code of Practice 2021 describes planning for structural stability, unplanned collapse, exclusion zones, plant, services, falling material and competent supervision. The responsible engineer or other authorised person should resolve structural sequence and temporary works before removal begins.
Check access and floor capacity from the selected plant
Use the actual machine and attachment data, not a generic robot weight or doorway claim. Confirm:
- machine operating mass, dimensions, reach and attachment loads;
- floor, ramp, loading-dock and temporary-platform capacity;
- door, corridor, lift, stair, slope and turning access;
- power, hydraulic, charging, ventilation and water requirements;
- edge protection, openings and travel near unsupported areas; and
- delivery, unloading, recovery and emergency access.
An ordinary passenger or goods lift should not be assumed capable of carrying the plant. A suspended floor should not be assumed capable of supporting the machine, debris and concentrated operating loads. Obtain the required engineering and facility approvals.
Locate services and hazardous materials before disturbance
Gather current drawings, service information, isolation plans, structural records and previous alteration history. Concrete scanning can reduce uncertainty for selected embedded targets, but it has method and access limitations and does not isolate a service.
Before demolition or refurbishment at a workplace, the project must address the asbestos register and any required survey, sampling, removal, clearance and notification process. Lead, hazardous chemicals, contaminated residues and other materials may require separate assessment.
Remote operation changes risk; it does not remove it
The operator needs a position with suitable visibility, communication and separation from collapse, ejected material, moving plant, hoses, cables and other people. The work zone should account for the machine, attachment swing or reach, falling material, debris movement and loss of visibility.
Plan guarding, exclusion, spotter or communication arrangements, emergency stops, isolation, maintenance and attachment changes from the selected equipment instructions and work method. People should not enter the operating zone merely because the controller is remote.
Control silica, dust, water and slurry
Breaking, crushing and processing concrete can generate respirable crystalline silica. Queensland's silica code and current framework apply to construction work including demolition and removal of demolition waste.
Controls may include isolation, enclosed plant, water suppression, local exhaust ventilation or a suitable combination, supported by the required risk-control process. Remote control alone does not eliminate airborne-contaminant exposure for the operator, nearby workers or occupants. Where water is used, plan containment, electrical conditions, slip control, collection and lawful slurry disposal. Any respiratory protection must form part of the complete site programme and cannot replace higher-order controls.
Do not promise minimal noise or vibration
Noise and vibration depend on the attachment, material, reinforcement, support conditions, operating technique, distance and building response. A compact machine can still transmit substantial energy. Identify sensitive structures, occupants, equipment and operating limits, and arrange engineering, noise or vibration monitoring where the project requires it.
State the proposed method and uncertainty rather than claiming that adjacent structures cannot be affected. Stop and reassess unexpected movement, cracking, noise, reinforcement, voids or changes in plant behaviour.
Plan debris, lifting and the remaining structure
Calculate how broken material will be contained, loaded, moved and removed without overloading a floor, edge, platform or access route. Separate reinforcement and heavy sections using an approved method. Protect openings and areas below, and keep egress and emergency access available.
Define who verifies the remaining surface and structure after each stage. Robotic breaking may be only one part of a scope that also needs saw cutting, core drilling, propping, lifting, grinding, waste classification or engineering inspection.
Use project milestones, not generic durations
- Scope accepted: removal limits, retained elements and responsibilities agreed.
- Pre-start evidence complete: engineering, licences, notices, hazardous-material information, services and permits resolved.
- Plant and access accepted: machine, attachment, floor loading, route and operating zone confirmed.
- Controls established: exclusion, dust, slurry, noise, debris and emergency arrangements checked.
- Staged removal: work proceeds to the approved sequence with hold points for changed conditions.
- Handover: debris removed, remaining area checked and records provided.
The duration of each milestone depends on access, engineering, material, reinforcement, disposal, occupied-site constraints and discoveries. A fixed three-day phase, percentage contingency or output multiple should not be copied into a new programme.

- structural, post-tension, temporary-works and floor-load information;
- service, asbestos and other hazardous-material records;
- occupied areas, working hours, noise, vibration, dust and slurry constraints;
- debris size, handling, loading and disposal requirements; and
- programme, hold points, required finish and handover records.
